Susan Nelms, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists
Dr. Nelms is a 1990 graduate of the Mississippi State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a post-doctoral surgery and medical internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Nelms completed an ophthalmology residency at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and became a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist in 1993 (Diplomate of Veterinary Ophthalmology).
In addition to her clinical interests, Dr. Nelms serves as a consulting ophthalmologist for Southern Research Institute, the Birmingham Zoo and the Alabama Wildlife Center. She is an extern mentor for Mississippi State University and Auburn University veterinary students. Her special ophthalmology interests include: cataract and other intraocular surgeries, corneal grafting and ocular manifestations of systemic diseases. Non-ophthalmologic interests include: spending time with her three children, horse back riding and long distance running.
